Christian Marriage Counselling: What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?

Marriage is one of the most meaningful relationships a person can experience.
It is also one of the relationships where people often experience the deepest joys and the deepest struggles.
Many couples enter marriage with love, commitment, and hope, but eventually discover that love alone does not automatically teach them how to communicate, resolve conflict, repair wounds, and understand each other's hearts.
Many Christian couples ask:
"What does God actually say about marriage?"
"How do we build a marriage that honours Him?"
"Can our relationship be healed?"
Christian marriage counselling begins with the belief that marriage matters deeply to God. It recognizes marriage as both a spiritual covenant and a human relationship that requires intentional care, humility, emotional maturity, and ongoing growth.
Marriage Was Designed for Connection
The first picture of marriage appears in Genesis.
After creating Adam, God says:
"It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Genesis 2:18
From the beginning, God's design was not isolation.
It was relationship.
Human beings were created for connection, with God and with one another.
Marriage reflects this desire for companionship, partnership, and unity.
However, marriage was never designed to mean two perfect people creating a perfect relationship.
Marriage is two imperfect people learning how to love, forgive, grow, and serve one another.
Marriage Is a Covenant, Not Just a Contract
One of the most important Biblical understandings of marriage is that it is a covenant.
A contract says:
"I will do my part as long as you do yours."
A covenant says:
"I am committed to loving faithfully, even when things become difficult."
This does not mean that someone should remain in situations involving abuse, manipulation, or ongoing harm.
Healthy covenant love includes truth, safety, responsibility, and respect.
A Biblical understanding of marriage recognizes both commitment and wisdom.
The Foundation of Marriage Is Love That Reflects Christ
One of the most well-known passages about marriage is found in Ephesians 5.
Paul writes about the relationship between husbands and wives and points ultimately to the example of Christ's love.
He writes:
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Ephesians 5:25
This is a powerful picture of love.
Christ-like love is:
Sacrificial
Humble
Patient
Protective
Compassionate
Faithful
Marriage is not about one person having power over another.
It is about reflecting the servant-hearted love of Jesus.
Biblical Marriage Requires Humility
Many marriage problems are not caused by a lack of love.
They are caused by a lack of humility.
Conflict often becomes:
"How do I prove I am right?"
instead of:
"How do we understand each other?"
Scripture teaches:
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." Philippians 2:3
Humility does not mean ignoring your needs.
It means approaching your spouse with curiosity and compassion.
It means being willing to ask:
"What is my spouse experiencing?"
"What part of this can I take responsibility for?"
"How can I love better?"
The Importance of Emotional Connection in Marriage
Many people grew up believing marriage was primarily about:
Providing
Raising children
Sharing responsibilities
Staying committed
These things matter.
But marriage is also about emotional connection.
A healthy marriage involves:
Being known
Being accepted
Feeling safe
Sharing vulnerability
Receiving comfort
Offering support
This aligns with the Biblical picture of becoming "one flesh."
Genesis 2:24 says:
"They will become one flesh."
Unity is not only physical.
It involves emotional, relational, and spiritual connection.
Why Christian Couples Struggle
Even couples who love God can experience significant challenges.
Common struggles include:
Communication Problems
Many couples are not intentionally trying to hurt each other.
They simply have different ways of processing emotions and conflict.
One person may need to talk immediately.
Another may need time to think.
One person may express hurt through emotion.
Another may withdraw.
Counselling helps couples understand these patterns.
Different Expectations
Many marriage conflicts begin with unspoken expectations.
Examples:
"I thought you would know what I needed."
"I assumed you felt the same way."
"I thought marriage would feel different."
Counselling helps couples identify expectations and create a shared vision.
Past Wounds Affecting the Present
Every person enters marriage with a story.
That story includes:
Family experiences
Childhood messages
Previous relationships
Attachment patterns
Emotional wounds
Sometimes a spouse is reacting not only to what is happening today, but also to what something reminds them of from the past.
Understanding this creates compassion.
The Role of Forgiveness in Marriage
Forgiveness is central to Christianity.
Jesus speaks often about forgiveness because relationships cannot survive without it.
However, Biblical forgiveness does not mean:
Pretending something did not happen
Ignoring harm
Removing accountability
Allowing repeated unhealthy behaviour
Forgiveness means releasing the desire to remain controlled by bitterness while still pursuing truth and healing.
Many couples need to learn the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation.
Forgiveness can begin with one person.
Reconciliation requires both people moving toward healing.
What Does Christian Marriage Counselling Involve?
Christian marriage counselling combines Biblical principles with evidence-based relationship approaches.
A therapist may help couples explore:
Communication Skills
Learning how to:
Listen
Validate
Express needs
Repair after conflict
Emotional Needs
Understanding:
"What is happening beneath the argument?"
Often anger is protecting deeper emotions such as:
Hurt
Fear
Rejection
Loneliness
Attachment and Connection
Many couples become stuck in cycles:
One partner pursues.
The other withdraws.
One partner feels abandoned.
The other feels overwhelmed.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps couples identify these patterns and rebuild secure connection.
Conflict Repair
Strong marriages are not conflict-free.
They are repair-focused.
Healthy couples learn:
How to apologize
How to take responsibility
How to reconnect after hurt
Can God Restore a Struggling Marriage?
Many couples wonder:
"Is it too late?"
While every situation is unique, many marriages experience healing when both people are willing to pursue change.
Restoration often requires:
Honesty
Humility
Patience
Commitment
Support
Spiritual growth
God is described throughout Scripture as a God of restoration.
Joel 2:25 says:
"I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten."
Restoration does not always mean returning to exactly what existed before.
Sometimes restoration means building something healthier and stronger than before.
Final Thoughts
Marriage is a beautiful gift, but it is also a relationship that requires intentional investment.
A Christian marriage is not defined by never having problems.
It is defined by the willingness to pursue love, humility, forgiveness, and growth.
If your marriage feels distant, stuck, or overwhelmed by conflict, seeking counselling is not a sign of failure.
It can be an act of wisdom.
It can be an investment in the relationship God created.
